October is Virginia Wine Month, a time to celebrate where our story began and to honor the land that continues to inspire everything we do.
When Della and Jim Bogaty bought their farm estate near Berryville, Virginia, in the early 1990s, they were simply looking for a quieter life — a place to escape the pace of the corporate world and find peace in the rolling hills of the Shenandoah Valley. Inspired by Jim’s Italian heritage and a family history of grape growing, they planted a few vines on their new property.
What began as a small hobby soon became something more — a calling that would shape their family’s future.
The Beginning of Veramar Vineyard
In 2000, those first vines gave way to something extraordinary: the founding of Veramar Vineyard, the Bogaty family’s first winery. At the time, there were only 62 wineries in all of Virginia, a far cry from the 300-plus that exist today. But Della and Jim believed deeply in the potential of this land and the quality of the wines it could produce.
Their son, Justin Bogaty, joined as winemaker in 2001, helping turn that belief into something tangible. Together, the family built a business founded on hard work, tradition, and a vision for the future — a sustainable, family-run vineyard that could be passed down through generations.
A Legacy of Place and Passion
Veramar’s name is a tribute to the Bogaty family matriarch, whose love for nature, family, and tradition continues to guide the vineyard’s spirit. From the very beginning, Veramar has been about more than just wine — it’s about creating moments worth savoring, in a place where beauty and connection come naturally.
Every view, every vine, and every bottle reflects the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. Here, Old-World craftsmanship meets the vibrant character of Virginia, producing wines that speak to the land and the family behind them.
Honoring the Land That Started It All
More than two decades later, Veramar stands as a cornerstone of Virginia’s wine country — one of the early believers that this region could produce wines worth sharing with the world.
This Virginia Wine Month, and every month, we raise a glass to this valley, this soil, and this family that continues to make it all possible.
